Matching RAM & Minefield/Beta 2
Today’s musings relate to the complexities of adding RAM to a system. I’m currently in the process of upgrading an HP laptop that is in some serious need of RAM (currently only 192 MB). Ordered some very reliable OCZ RAM from my supplier and eagerly awaited its arrival. Installation was a breeze, and on Power-up, the computer….powered up — which is always a good thing (computer upgraders will know…when installing RAM, there’s no guarantee that the computer will boot). Went into Windows, System Properties and….192 MB RAM. *Sigh* For all the times that I’ve installed mismatched RAM and had zero problems, it clearly does not mean that you can ALWAYS install RAM of different speeds and get a desired result. Now I wait for my slower stick of RAM to be delivered.
Also of note, I’m experiencing fantastic gratification by helping support the development of future generations of Mozilla Firefox. If you peruse their sites, you will find that they Firefox 2.0 Beta for download, which features a new skin, Red X’s on each tab, and several other improvements. For those with true courage, there is also Mozilla Minefield, or Firefox 3.0a1. This browser is my current browser of choice just because…it’s bleeding edge. It currently offers no cool features that I don’t see in 2.0, but…just by running it, and having it crash (very, very frequently), and reporting the information about each crash, I’m helping to support future versions of the browser I hold so dear. OK, that was a little nerdy to say, but it’s true. Oh, and for the record, if you want to download 2.0, I fully support you doing so. You can get it here. I DO NOT support you getting Minefield unless you are truly, truly, truly capable of dealing with repeated crashes and undesirable results. If you can … then help the Mozilla team by downloading here…and always, always, always use the Quality Feedback Agent, otherwise your frustrations will not help the team.
The RCR Blog.
For those of you who don’t know, I am a huge NASCAR fan. Well, actually I’m a huge racing fan, and Nextel Cup & Busch Racing are the most entertaining to me. And quite frankly, as a fan, this may just be my best year yet. Sure, nothing will ever come close to the emotional roller coaster experienced back in 91-93 as a Davey Allison fan. Those years will always hold a tender spot in my heart — but this season as a RCR fan has been amazing. Let me recap:
My favorite driver, Kevin Harvick, is on a tear. Currently leading the Busch series by 699 points (with only 6 races left, he can not even show up for three of those races and still have a 120 point lead) he’s well on his way to his second Busch title. As a matter of fact, he has a shot to become the only racer in history to win both the Busch and Cup series in the same year. No one has ever come close. He did have the points lead for the Cup series as the Chase for the Championship started last week, but now has fallen to fifth after a blown motor. No worries though, as team RCR picked up Kevin’s slack with Clint Bowyer winning on Saturday, and Jeff Burton winning on Sunday AND taking the Cup series lead. I can’t say that I’d be 100% ecstatic if Jeff Burton won a Championship for RCR before Kevin did…but if it’s not in the cards for Kevin, then go Burton go!
In a time where victories are very hard to come by, RCR has given their fans a hell of year with 13 victories so far (Busch: Kevin 5, Burton 2, Bowyer 1 — Cup: Kevin 4, Burton 1) and there are still 14 more to go. No matter what happens the rest of the year, this has definitely been a season to remember.
Double Standard.
How many of you actually read blogs? I know that I never did, until I started this whole web design thing, and now I find them to be so entertaining/useful. However, my favorite blog is still at FullContactPoker where Daniel Negreanu writes daily about his exoribitent lifestyle…the poker tournaments, the crazy clubs, the high-priced bets on — food eating? golf? drinking? He lives a lifestyle that can only be afforded by a thick bank account.
I love reading the blog, but lately I’ve been getting irritated by the fact that he’s only adding 1 post a week, instead of his normal 4-5. It makes you wonder if he’s reprioritized his life and decided that his loyal readers aren’t as important as they used to be.
And then it hits me. What about my loyal readers? Why is it OK for me to be irate over his slackerness and not my own?
So I apologize. The blog posts shall flow more freely from me in the coming weeks. Hopefully, I’ll actually get up to the 4-5 a week that I admired from him in the first place.
